It rises in a hilly area 29 km from the sea and 50 km from Monte Amiata. It is assumed that the name Scansano come, according to some, from the Varroniana a widespread throughout the territory type of grapes.

In the old center, as well as smaller buildings, you can see the Court (1425), Casa dell’Abbondanza (the House of Plenty -1600), the church of San Giovanni Battista (1628) and the recently restored Madonna statue (1400).


The Petreto Convent appeared in some records in 1274, when the division of territory between the two branches of the Aldobrandeschi family was submitted to the dominion of the counts of Santa Fiora.

The second weekend of October  Scansano celebrate the festival of wine, along the alleys of the medieval old town, you can taste various types of Morellino di Scansano.
